How the Slow Food Project became successful!

Do all American people really eat junk food? We now companies like Mc Donald´s and Subway for this kind of food. What if I tell you that in Austria the thinking turned around 160 degrees the last years. You can see that the healthy and regional food comes more and more important! Greta is a good example: It had to be a child that told us, we need to change something, to keep our world just as it is. And the Slow Food Project used this way of thinking to became huge and successful. I tell you how they did it.

It started with Slow Food Travel. It was a game changing Event! The slow food community combined sustainable nutrition and tourism. It became so popular they decided to expand their ideas. It was like you wanted a ticket for Ed Sheeran and you didn´t get one. So, they thought to upgrade their project to a higher level: The villages emerged.

Let´s come to the point:

1st – The searched for a functional community

People, which are reliable. This could be anyone. In the example of the Slow Food Village Obervellach– It was just an insurance agent, who has nothing to do with food at all! But he had a vision and a positive mindset and had heard from a colleague of the project “Slow Food Village”.

2nd – They needed food production in the same village.

A good mix is needed for every recipe! That´s why they looked for bakeries, butchers, vegetable farmers, and cooks within the region. If they wanted to be part of this slow food project they had to get used to the sustainable and regional idea. The consumer wants to know where the food comes from and the ecological Footprint is more and more important in times like this.

3rd – They also needed innkeepers in the region who use these products.

They really had to be a community where one hand washes the other. Networking is the most important thing for local food and every other company nowadays. I give u one example in Obervellach: There was a potato farmer 200 meters away from a restaurant and they needed the slow food project to talk each other. Now they are business partners and as slow food member they profit also from its marketing and its ideas and the sustainable thinking.

4th- The children must be educated, be trained, and learn to communicate.

A very important aspect is the regional and sustainable thinking. Children can be a part in the Slow Food projekt and sustainable education and communication. The Slow Food program has 16 school partners. The pupils also learn how to calculate with the food prices from the region.

5th – A marketplace is essential.

It means that in the center of the village a store should sell the clean and fair food from the region. A huge variety of this products where the consumer don´t have to drive around the globe to get everything at time. This could be a grocery, a bakery or something else. You just must get everything you need in one place.

6th The slow food experience!

The created cooking areas where the people of the community could come and cook with granny’s old recipes with food from around. You can come at any time and learn to cook with the fresh products from the village. Another example for a food experience was our Slow Food day that was a huge success, and all the people rushed the restaurants in Obervellach as there was no tomorrow.

So, you see – they didn´t have to reinvent the wheel. They took what was already there and improved it regarding to the new and modern thinking: Sustainability! Regionality! Networking! Waste sorting! Fresh and clean food!

  1. I find this concept very promising for the future. Most people want to go back to the roots. With today’s technical possibilities, you can bring your products and services to the customer. I really like the cooperation with kindergartens and primary schools. This part reminds me of the „Seminarbäuerinnen“.
